Who we are

Vancouver skyline The Cultural Section of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) is part of a worldwide network of 90 Italian government offices established in all continents with a view to promoting Italian culture and civilization. Among their main tasks, the IICs organize cultural events, offer courses of Italian language and civilization, facilitate contacts between Italian and local researchers and scholars and cooperate with local cultural organizations and academic institutions.

One of three such offices in Canada (along with Montreal and Toronto), the Istituto in Vancouver was established in 1980 and is located in downtown Vancouver, at 510 West Hastings (suite 500), in the beautiful 1913 "Standard Building" which also hosts the other offices of the Consulate.

Our main mandate is to make Italian culture known to the society at large in Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory) through the organization of artistic, cultural and academic events, the provision of courses of Italian language and civilization and the dissemination of information about Italy and its society. The vast majority of the events we organize are entirely free and open to the public. With a few exceptions, all our events are conducted in the English language.

Promoting Italian culture in Canada also involves learning about Canadian culture, and fostering cultural exchanges. In order to reach a wider community and a diversified audience, the Istituto regularly teams up with local cultural and academic institutions, as well as with the Italian communities in the two provinces.
